We Are One

JOHN 10:22-30

“The Father and I are One”

People get hung up on the idea of the Trinity.  Like somehow it is impossible to be more than one thing at a time.  However my sons, I don’t find this to be hard to believe at all when I look at you and see myself.  You both have certain physical features (nose, lips, shoulders etc) that are miniature versions of my own.  Your mannerisms, habits, and preferences remind my of myself many times throughout the day.  You are you, but you are also me.  I am me, but I am also you.  Further, if you consider how much my happiness is effected by your happiness you could even start to see how our lives are actually interdependent, and from the moment of your births, inseparable.  Ultimately and without question, if either of you ceased to live a significant part of me would die with you, and if both of you died before me I would not be far behind you in line for the pearly gates.

So why then should it be so hard to believe that GOD, the creator of all things, that one thing which transcends time, space, and matter; might share in one singular existence with his son and a disembodied spirit?  Are we so narrow minded that we cannot even see the precedent for this complex relationship even in our own lives?  We should not have to prove God’s power in our own relatively microscopic frame of reference, but there it is none the less.  The Trinity is real: God can be whatever he wishes whether we can conceptualize it or not.  Most importantly though, I’m thankful that this duality is shared between you and I because sharing my being with you two has been the greatest gift of my life.  I love you forever.
